![]() ![]() And yet a part of me kind of misses the giddy moment that you log in only to find that you're a level 1 peon again instead of the level 11 unholy terror of legend. Could you *imagine* if that's how online games worked today? Sure, in some ways that might completely suck. When this happened, the entire game would reset and everything would start back over. In retrospect, perhaps the strangest feature of all was that eventually someone could actually win the game by beating the ultimate big bad of the setting- the Red Dragon itself. I never played any of those myself of course since I was too young at the time. Some were silly, or had movie themes, and a few were even X-rated. One might be running a vanilla fantasy version, while another might have a more futuristic or post apocalyptic theme and setup. You see, the descriptions, items, weapons, monsters, and modules could be edited from the host end, resulting in sometimes totally different LORD feels across different boards. For example, LORD was completely customizable. Sure, in many ways LORD is like a primitive predecessor to current gen MMO games, but there were some features of LORD that I kind of miss and sometimes feel nostalgic for. Oh, there was also a secret tavern in the wilderness you could find and carve messages for people into the table. Of course for those of us that weren't really playing to win, you could just lounge around at the tavern and chat with random adventurers. ![]()
